Mountain E-Bike Bonanza

Is it just us or are there more and more people out there on E-Bikes these days? We’ve certainly noticed an increase in enquiries and sales of them in our stores. Perhaps its the fact that the technology is rapidly getting better, or maybe more people are just charmed by the idea of a bike they don’t have to pedal uphill – whatever the reason, E-Bikes are here to stay.

One area of cycling where the electric bike really comes into its own is mountain biking. The ability to just whizz up the inclines, maximising your time doing the fun bit (flying downhill at breakneck speed), is almost too tempting to say no to. It’s not just about avoiding climbing either, there may be some cases where you’re keen to go on, but simply can’t because of time or terrain constraints. E-Bikes offer a solution to those problems too.

With so much to recommend them, we thought it was about time we had a look at our range of bikes and picked out a few favourites – so you can say goodbye to pedalling uphill – or even worse, push-biking – for good.

Giant Dirt E+ 2

With a paint job that’s as electrifying as its onboard motor, this E-Bike from Giant is an absolute (thunder) stormer. The frame is built with durable aluminium, while the Suntour XCR fork has a remote lockout feature so you can turn it off and on without dismounting, or leaning precariously over the bars. We also love the way Giant have styled the down tube so the EnergyPak battery system for the motor isn’t too obtrusive.

The motor adds around 80 Newton Metres of torque to your pedal stroke – enough to see you comfortably up all but the most precipitous hills.

Specialized Turbo Levo

Rather than a specific model, the Turbo Levo is actually a family of E-Bikes from Specialized. The US brand wanted to create a bike that was just as fun to ride on the trails as a non-motorised bike, which meant it still had to be as light and agile as possible – to give you that super-sprightly riding experience. As a result Turbo Levo bikes have the same ultra-short chain-stays you’d expect from a regular Specialized MTB machine, plus a low bottom bracket that’ll have you feeling like the bike is literally glued to the ground.

Specialized claim their pedal assist tech is the most powerful in the world, adding 90 Newton Metres to the total power output – which is equivalent to about 500 watts.

Trek Powerfly+

Trek’s RIDE+ electric bike technology promises to turn “every mountain into a hill”. We’re pretty sure a mountain is still a mountain whatever bike you’re riding, but you get the picture they’re trying to paint.

The frame of their Powerfly+ models is made with trail-ready, tough aluminium, while the motors used are provided by long-established hardware brand, Bosch. The Powerfly+ is available in both a men’s and women’s model, with the women’s version benefitting from their WSD (women specific design) geometry. Both men’s and women’s versions come with remote lockout on the front shock, for easier, travel-free climbing.
