Maintenance essentials
There’s never been a more important time to take care of your bike than during the winter months. Rain and muck can really wear down our machines so it’s important we stay on top of keeping our bike clean – after all, a clean bike is a fast bike. Christmas is the best time to build your arsenal of cleaning supplies, from all-over bike cleaners to degreasers and lubricants.
Cleaning isn’t the only maintenance you’ll need to do over winter, with all the ice, potholes and debris over the roads you’re sure to pick up a fair few punctures. Whether you’re fixing your inner tubes at the roadside or replacing new ones when you get home, you’ll need a few essentials – pump, tyre levers and a selection of spares.
You can’t go wrong with a handy multitool either, they’re compact, super useful and – best of all – they’ll fit snuggly inside your Christmas stocking.
Winter warmers
If you’re planning a winter of riding following the Christmas period, either training for the season ahead or simply trying to shift the turkey weight, then you’ll need to wrap up warm. Covering your extremities is the first port of call and as long as fingers and toes stay toasty, then so will the rest of your body.
Thermal gloves and socks are a must, as are a pair of overshoes, legwarmers and armwarmers. What makes these thermals so great is that they can be thrown on or off mid-ride should the weather suddenly change.
Try something different
As the new year rolls around, many of us may want to dabble in something new. What better two-wheeled venture to take up in 2019 than the super popular adventure riding discipline, an intrepid mix of touring and off-road riding.
For those longer adventures, you may just want to strap a few bags to your bike. From seat packs to frame bags, it’s amazing how much your bike can carry.
As well as carrying options, you’ll also need a few extra accessories to help your journey run that little bit smoother. Phone mounts and dry bags may seem simple enough, but you’ll soon be singing their praises when you’re lost in a winter downpour.

What better time to splurge on fancy finishing kit and additional aesthetics than during Christmas, a time when your riding mates won’t judge you for swapping your bland black dust caps for sparkly new red ones.
