With its smooth-riding composite frame, lightweight battery, and new SyncDrive Move Plus integrated rear hub motor, the Defy Advanced E+ is the ideal choice for performance-minded road riders who want to tackle steep hills, maintain higher speeds, and experience road riding with no limitations.
A 1.7 kg Giant SyncDrive Move Plus rear hub motor (30 Nm, equivalent to 75 Nm from a mid-drive motor) and a 2.3 kg, 400 Wh EnergyPak battery built into the down tube, compatible with the EnergyPak Plus 200 range extender.
The assist builds smoothly with no sudden surges, and the motor doesn't drag when you freewheel, so it still rides like a road bike with help on tap. Add the range extender for your biggest days.
A carbon frame in Giant's Advanced-grade composite, paired with an Advanced SL-grade composite fork with a full-composite OverDrive Aero steerer.
With the motor and battery tucked away, this looks and rides like a regular carbon endurance bike made for long days in the saddle. Nobody on the club run needs to know you've got help.
SRAM Rival AXS wireless electronic 2x12 gearing with 46/33T chainrings and a 10-36T cassette, plus SRAM Blips for switching assist modes.
Every shift happens at the press of a button, and once you've had electronic gearing you won't go back. The 33x36 bottom gear helps on long, steep climbs, where the small hub motor's modest torque means you still do your share.
SRAM Rival AXS hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm Paceline rotors front and rear.
The bike carries a little extra weight and holds its pace, so strong, consistent hydraulic braking lets you scrub off speed with a light pull on wet descents and into tight bends.
Tubeless-ready Giant P-R2 alloy wheels with a 22 mm inner rim width, fitted with 32 mm Giant Gavia Fondo 0 tubeless tyres.
Run them tubeless and you can drop the pressure to soak up broken tarmac, potholed lanes and the odd light gravel track, with far fewer punctures cutting your long day out short.
A Giant Contact SL D-Fuse alloy handlebar and a Giant D-Fuse composite seatpost.
Both are shaped to flex a little and absorb road buzz before it reaches you, so you finish those big days with less ache in your hands and lower back.
A tail light built into the seatpost clamp, plus a fender adapter for fitting mudguards.
You're visible from behind without strapping anything on, and with mudguards fitted the bike handles winter club rides and the commute without road spray up your back.

Anyone who loves how an endurance road bike rides gets that here, as it shares its frame feel with the non-electric Defy Advanced. The assist builds smoothly as you push on the pedals, with no sudden surges, and there's no motor drag when you coast. With the motor tucked into the rear hub and the battery inside the down tube, it looks stealthy too.
If you're happy to keep pedalling, it makes steep hills noticeably easier without doing the climbing for you. Torque is the turning force the motor adds: this rear hub gives 30 Nm, rated as equal to 75 Nm from a mid-drive motor, and a bottom gear just under 1:1 helps too. Riders wanting to be carried up with little effort will be happier on a higher-torque mid-drive e-bike.
Range depends on the assist mode you use, how hilly the route is, your weight, the wind and the temperature, and time spent above 15.5 mph, where the assist stops, barely touches the battery. For bigger days out the bike takes Giant's EnergyPak Plus 200 range extender, which adds 200 Wh to the 400 Wh battery, giving you half as much capacity again.
Comfort on long days is one of its strengths, starting with the carbon endurance frame. The D-Fuse seatpost and handlebar flex slightly to take the edge off road buzz, and 32 mm tubeless tyres you can run at lower pressures smooth out rough lanes. If you'd like a different stem or bars for your fit, we'll swap in any you buy with the bike free of charge.
On fast club runs you simply ride on under your own power above 15.5 mph, as that's where UK law stops the assist. Up to that point the motor is tuned to keep helping at brisk road speeds. Derestricting it or fitting a speed box breaks the law, as it would then count as a moped or motorcycle needing registration, tax, a driving licence and a crash helmet.
Go by your height: S starts at 166 cm (5 ft 5 in), M at 172 cm (5 ft 8 in), ML at 178 cm (5 ft 10 in), L at 184 cm (6 ft 0 in) and XL at 190 cm (6 ft 3 in), up to 198 cm (6 ft 6 in). Each size overlaps the next by 2 cm, so if you fit two, try both in store.
Most riders will find the Elite 2 plenty, with the same carbon frame, motor and battery as the Elite 1 and Elite 0, and wireless electronic gears on all three. Once you've used those, you won't go back. It also has the range's lowest climbing gear. Stepping up mainly gets you higher-grade electronic groupsets and 36 mm deep carbon wheels.
Winter miles and the commute are well catered for, as it comes with a mudguard adapter so you can fit guards and keep spray off you and the riders behind. A rear light is built into the seatpost clamp, and hydraulic disc brakes give strong, predictable stopping in the wet, so dark, damp mornings feel far less of a chore.
