What Trek Says

Marlin 5 is a trail-worthy daily rider that's perfectly suited for everyday adventures, on and off the trail. It features a trail-savvy frame with a suspension fork, 9-speed Shimano CUES shifting and mounts for a rack and kickstand that make it an ideal choice for trail riders or anyone looking for a comfortable, stable commuter with the ruggedness of a real mountain bike.

  • Will my bike have a curved top tube?Smaller frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frame sizes have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Features and benefits

What you get
Why it matters
01

Roomy aluminium frame for confident trail riding

An Alpha Silver aluminium hardtail frame with internal derailleur routing, and the complete bike weighs 15.10 kg in size M.

Its long, roomy shape puts you in a balanced position, so you feel steadier heading down rooty descents and the back tyre keeps its grip when a climb turns loose. It's a frame your skills can grow into.

02

Front suspension that locks out on tarmac

An SR Suntour XCT 30 coil-sprung fork with 100 mm of travel (80 mm on size XS), preload adjustment and a hydraulic lockout.

It takes the sting out of roots and potholes, then locks firm so you don't bounce along the road home. It's a simple, weighty fork, happiest on steady trail rides rather than rough, fast descents.

03

Shimano CUES 9-speed with an easy climbing gear

Shimano CUES 9-speed gearing with a single 32T chainring, an 11-46T LinkGlide cassette and a U4000 rear derailleur.

The 46T sprocket gives you a low gear for steep, muddy climbs, with no front gears to juggle. LinkGlide is built to last and shift smoothly under load, which suits gritty winter miles.

04

Disc brakes for dependable stopping in the wet

Disc brakes on Shimano RT26 rotors, 180 mm at the front and 160 mm at the rear, with a 160 mm front rotor on sizes XS and S.

Discs keep stopping consistent through mud and rain, so a soggy trail or wet commute still feels in control. On bigger sizes the larger front rotor adds bite on long descents, where the front brake works hardest.

05

Wide 2.40 in tyres for grip and comfort

Bontrager Montrose Comp 2.40 in tyres on double-wall Bontrager Connection alloy rims, with 29 in wheels on sizes M to XXL and 27.5 in on XS and S.

The wide, grippy tyres bite in loose corners and cushion rough tracks, and the 29 in wheels on bigger sizes roll smoothly over roots and keep their momentum along gravel paths.

06

Rack and kickstand mounts for everyday riding

Rack and kickstand mounts on the frame, plus internal routing ready for a dropper seatpost.

Bolt on a rack and panniers and the Marlin handles the commute and shopping all week, then heads for the trails at the weekend. A dropper post can go in later to lower the saddle on steep descents.

07

Seven frame sizes for shorter and taller riders

Seven frame sizes from XS to XXL, with a curved top tube on size XS for a lower standover height.

Whether you're on the short side or very tall, there's a size that suits your height. On XS the dipped top tube gives smaller riders more room to stand over the bike and put a foot down at a stop.

If your weekends mean forest singletrack, bridleways and woodland trails, the Marlin 5 is a brilliant first mountain bike. Its roomy, balanced riding position feels sure-footed heading downhill and keeps the rear tyre gripping on climbs. Chunky 2.40 in tyres and the suspension fork soak up rough ground, and the frame has internal routing ready for a dropper post, a saddle you can lower on the move.

Mixing weekday commutes with weekend trails is exactly what the Marlin 5 does well. There are mounts for a rack and kickstand, so it can carry panniers to work and stand up on its own when you get there, and locking out the fork keeps it firm on tarmac. The wide, grippy tyres feel steady over potholes, broken surfaces and gravel paths on the way home.

If you ride a bit of everything, the Marlin 5 is a lovely middle ground: over the Marlin 4 you gain a ninth gear and a fork that locks out for the road. Want tubeless-ready rims, so you can ditch the inner tubes, and a RockShox fork? That's the Marlin 6. The Marlin 7 adds a wider 12-speed range and weighs almost 1 kg less in size M.

Cross-country trails, bridleways and everyday riding are where the Marlin belongs, and it's just as happy carrying you to work as on a Sunday trail loop. If you're drawn to steeper, rougher trails and harder riding, the Roscoe is the better fit: it's a dedicated trail hardtail with a longer fork, wider tyres and a dropper post on every model.

With seven sizes, there's a fit from 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) on the XS to 203 cm (6 ft 8 in) on the XXL. Smaller riders on the XS and S get 27.5 in wheels and narrower bars, and the XS adds a dipped top tube that's easier to stand over. If you're between sizes, let your inside leg measurement help you decide.

Simplicity is the big win. With a single shifter and nothing to adjust at the front, you just click up or down the 9 gears at the back and keep your mind on the trail. The wide spread of rear sprockets still gives you a bottom gear easier than 1:1 for winching up steep climbs, and a top gear tall enough to cruise along the road to the trails.

Plenty for mixed trails: there's 100 mm of travel on every size except the XS, which has 80 mm. That smooths out roots, stones and rutted bridleways, and you can tweak how firm it feels with the preload adjuster. Lock it out on smooth climbs and fire roads and it stops bobbing, so more of your pedalling drives you forward.

In a size M the Marlin 5 weighs 15.10 kg. For heavier riders, the figure to know is the maximum total weight of 136 kg, which covers the bike, you and anything you carry together. On a size M that leaves about 120 kg for you and your kit, including loaded panniers on the commute.

However you ride, bring it to your nearest Bicycle Chain store for its free first check within 6 weeks, or within about 3 weeks if you commute on it daily. If anything feels wrong before then, book it in straight away. After that, we recommend a service every 6 months if you ride regularly, or every 12 months if you ride occasionally, to keep it smooth and reliable.

As the original owner, you get a lifetime warranty on the aluminium frame, and anyone you sell it to gets 3 years from the original purchase. Trek's own parts, the alloy wheels and the paint have 2 years, while the suspension fork and gears are covered by their makers' own warranties. Claims go through an authorised retailer with proof of purchase; wear and tear and crash damage aren't covered.
