Features and benefits

What you get
Why it matters
01

Butted alloy frame with a low-fuss rigid fork

A hydroformed, multi-butted 6061 T6 aluminium frame with internal cable routing, paired with Whyte's own rigid 6061 alloy fork.

With no suspension to maintain or carry, more of your rider's effort goes into pedalling and nothing can go out of adjustment. The fat tyres soften the bumps on woodland trails instead.

02

Simple Shimano Essa 1x8 gearing for hills

A Shimano Essa 1x8 drivetrain with a single trigger shifter, a 32T narrow/wide chainring and an 11-45T cassette.

With one shifter and no front gears there's only one thing to learn. The 45-tooth sprocket gives small legs an easy gear for steep climbs, and the narrow/wide chainring helps keep the chain on over bumps.

03

Hydraulic disc brakes sized for small hands

Tektro HD-J820 hydraulic disc brakes front and rear with 160 mm rotors and junior-specific levers.

Hydraulic discs need much less hand strength than cable brakes, and the junior levers sit within easy reach of small fingers, so your rider can slow down with control on steep, loose descents, wet or dry.

04

Wide 2.3 in tyres for grip and comfort

24 in Whyte Trail alloy rims with Kenda K-Rad 2.3 in tyres front and rear.

With no suspension fork, the tyres do the cushioning. These wide ones hold plenty of air to grip roots and loose dirt, and they soften bumps before they reach small hands and arms.

05

Kid-sized contact points for comfort and control

A 620 mm Whyte riser bar on a 35 mm stem, Whyte custom grips, a Whyte Jr Mid saddle, 140 mm cranks and composite platform pedals.

The short stem and riser bar keep your rider upright with quick, easy steering through twisty woodland. The short cranks suit small legs, so pedalling feels natural and the pedals clear roots more easily.

Fantastically light

Fantastically light

The Whyte Secta 24’s lightweight multi-butted aluminium frame uses a purpose-built tubeset (not cut-down adult tubes) to reduce weight, making climbs and long rides easier and more enjoyable for young riders. The fully rigid fork is also significantly lighter (than a suspension fork) and the lower overall weight makes the bike much easier for small riders to handle, accelerate and climb with, boosting enjoyment and promoting positive riding skills and experiences.

Small but perfectly formed

Small but perfectly formed

Grips, saddle, brake levers and cranks are all sized ideally for early riders. Eight speed Shimano gears are flawlessly smooth for easy climbing, and fast rolling but grippy-when-it matters Kenda tyres make climbing the hills to get those thrills as easy as possible. Powerful disc brakes with junior levers mean no runaway wrecks and high-volume, low-pressure tyres flow over trouble without skipping to inspire comfort and confidence on off-road tracks.

Brilliant fit, perfect flow

Brilliant fit, perfect flow

24in wheels front and rear ensure the best, most proportionate bike fit and help deliver a balanced and trail-smoothing ride for smaller riders. Wide, high volume 2.3in tyres also enhances comfort, grip and confidence on rough trails and tracks by smoothing out bumps and vibrations (better than narrower, lower volume tyres). They can also be run at lower pressures for an even more cushioned ride.

That's exactly what it's built for. It isn't a kids' bike dressed up to look tough. It has the shape and handling of a real mountain bike, so it stays stable and helps them feel confident when the ground gets rough. It grips well on loose dirt and stops with real control, which makes it a brilliant first bike for trail centre days, woodland trails and exploring bridleways together.

It's sized for children of around 7 to 9 years old who are roughly 120 to 140 cm tall, so go by height rather than age. A child at the shorter end of that range has the most riding ahead of them. The 250 mm seatpost lets you keep raising the saddle as their legs get longer, so they can grow into it rather than out of it.

Keeping the bike light makes a big difference when the rider is small, and a rigid alloy fork is much lighter than most suspension forks. Your child will find it easier to pedal uphill, lift the front wheel over roots and steer through tight turns. The wide 2.3 in tyres cushion a lot of the bumps, and there's no suspension to set up, lock out or service.

Fewer things to think about means more fun on the trail. With a single chainring there's just one shifter to use, so your child simply clicks up and down through eight gears and never has to juggle two. The biggest cog at the back is larger than the chainring up front, giving a bottom gear lower than 1:1 that makes steep climbs much easier for young legs.

Your child should find them easy to reach and easy to use, because the hydraulic disc brakes have junior-specific levers made for small hands. Hydraulic brakes need only a light squeeze to slow down, which helps when little fingers get tired on a long descent, and they stay strong in mud and rain. With 160 mm rotors front and rear there's plenty of stopping power for steep trails.

For riding to the trails, along cycle paths or to a friend's house it's absolutely fine, and with no suspension none of their effort is lost to bouncing. The wide off-road tyres are made for grip on dirt, though, so long tarmac rides will feel slower and harder work. If most of their riding will be on roads, a kids' bike with narrower, smoother tyres will suit them better.

If you want a kids' bike built like a grown-up mountain bike rather than a toy, this is a strong choice. The frame is hydroformed, multi-butted aluminium, which means it's shaped and slimmed where it can be to save weight. The cables run neatly inside the frame, where they're tidy and protected. Even the wheel hubs are double sealed to help keep out the mud and water of British winter rides.

If your child would feel more comfortable with the bars a little higher or closer, we can fit a different stem or handlebar when you buy the bike, and we don't charge for fitting any components you buy with your new bike. As standard it comes with a short 35 mm stem and a 620 mm wide riser bar, which give steady, responsive steering on the trail.

You get 2 years of frame cover for the original owner against material and manufacturing defects, plus 1 year on parts and 1 year on paint and decals. If you register the bike free with Whyte within 28 days of buying it, the frame warranty becomes lifetime for the original owner. It's well worth doing as soon as you get it home.

Every bike we sell gets a free first check at your nearest Bicycle Chain store. We ask that it comes back within 6 weeks, or straight away if anything feels wrong before then. After that, a service every 6 months for regular riding or every 12 months for occasional use keeps it running smoothly and helps its resale value when your child moves up a size.
