What Trek Says

The Domane AL 4 is a speedy and versatile road bike that's a perfect starting point for anyone looking to get into road riding. With an Alpha Aluminium frame, clearance for larger tyres, a 10-speed Shimano Tiagra drivetrain, top tube mounts and an all-day road comfort geometry – the Domane AL 4 is perfect for casual pedalling, group rides, fast commutes and even venturing beyond tarmac roads to most gravel roads.

Features and benefits

What you get
Why it matters
01

Aluminium frame and carbon fork for long days

A 100 Series Alpha Aluminium endurance frame with internal cable routing and a Domane AL carbon fork, weighing 10.35 kg in size 56.

Endurance geometry sits you a little more upright and keeps the handling stable, so long rides and your first group rides feel comfortable and confident. The carbon fork takes the edge off buzz from rough country lanes.

02

Shimano Tiagra gearing with easy climbing gears

Shimano Tiagra 2x10 gearing with 50/34T chainrings and an 11-32T cassette.

The small 34-tooth chainring and biggest 32-tooth sprocket give you an easy gear for steep lanes and long climbs, while the 50x11 top gear keeps you pedalling on fast descents and quicker group rides.

03

Tiagra hydraulic discs for confident wet-weather stopping

Shimano Tiagra hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm Shimano RT66 rotors.

A light squeeze from the hoods slows you smoothly and predictably, even on wet descents and gritty winter lanes, so you can relax and enjoy the ride downhill rather than worrying about stopping.

04

Wide 32 mm tyres for smoother back lanes

Bontrager Paradigm SL tubeless-ready rims fitted with 32 mm Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite tyres.

At lower pressures the 32 mm tyres smooth out broken tarmac and add grip on damp corners, with a puncture-resistant casing. When they wear out, going tubeless on these rims is an easy route to a quicker feel.

05

Ready for mudguards, bags and gravel roads

Mudguard mounts on the frame and carbon fork, top tube mounts and clearance for wider tyres than the 32 mm fitted.

Fit mudguards and it becomes a year-round commuter and winter club bike that keeps you and the rider behind you drier. Add a top tube bag for snacks and wider tyres for gravel roads and towpaths.

06

Standard parts for easy servicing and upgrades

A threaded Shimano BSA bottom bracket, a round 27.2 mm alloy seatpost and a UDH rear derailleur hanger.

Spares are easy to find and any workshop can service them, so a bent hanger or bearings worn by winter grit won't keep you off the bike for long. A comfier carbon seatpost is a simple later upgrade.

If you want to ride further in comfort rather than chase race results, this is the bike for you. As an endurance bike it sits you in a more relaxed position, steers steadily and has room for wider tyres. Race and aero bikes, such as Trek's Madone, stretch you lower and longer for outright speed, which suits racers but asks more of your back on long days.

Long days are where this bike is happiest. The more upright endurance position takes pressure off your hands and neck, the carbon fork softens rough tarmac and the 32 mm tyres smooth out road buzz, especially at slightly lower pressures. If the saddle or bars don't suit you, we keep a wide range in stock and don't charge to swap in any you buy with the bike.

Steep lanes feel far more manageable with these gears. The small chainring and biggest rear sprocket give a bottom gear close to 1:1, so you can stay seated and keep spinning up long drags rather than grinding. Shift to the big chainring and there's still plenty of top-end speed for fast flat roads, descents and keeping pace on group rides.

Expect a sturdy bike rather than a featherweight: it weighs 10.35 kg in a size 56, which you will notice on long climbs. In return, the tough aluminium frame shrugs off winter miles and commuting, and its standard-size parts keep repairs and upgrades simple. If a livelier feel on climbs and when accelerating matters most to you, a carbon Domane is the natural step up.

Smooth gravel tracks, towpaths and forest roads are all fair game. It comes on 32 mm tyres and has room for wider ones, so you can add extra grip and cushioning when your rides head off the tarmac more often. The stable, predictable handling keeps you confident when the surface turns loose, and a gravel shortcut on the way home becomes part of the fun.

Winter miles and wet commutes are well catered for. Both the aluminium frame and the carbon fork have mudguard mounts, so full mudguards bolt on securely and keep you far drier on wet lanes. There are top tube mounts for a small bag too, and the hydraulic disc brakes stop confidently in the rain, which you'll appreciate on dark winter evenings.

With seven sizes, most riders find a good match, from 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) on the 44 up to 191 cm (6 ft 3 in) on the 61. As a guide, the 56 suits riders of 174 to 180 cm (5 ft 9 in to 5 ft 11 in). If your height falls where two sizes meet, your inside leg measurement helps you choose.

Going tubeless is an easy upgrade, because the wheels are tubeless ready. To make the switch you'll need tubeless-compatible tyres, valves and sealant. In return you can run slightly lower pressures for extra comfort and grip, and the sealant seals most small punctures as you ride. Top it up every few months, and more often in a hot summer.

As the original owner you get a lifetime warranty on the frame and fork when you buy from an authorised retailer, and a later owner still gets 3 years from your purchase date. Parts, accessories and paint are covered for 2 years, with other brands' parts under their maker's own warranty. Keep your proof of purchase for claims, and note that wear and tear and crash damage aren't covered.

If the Domane is your daily commuter, bring it back for its free first check within about 3 weeks; otherwise, within 6 weeks of buying it, at your nearest Bicycle Chain store. Book in straight away if anything feels wrong before then. After that, we recommend a service every 6 months if you ride regularly, or yearly for occasional riding, to keep it smooth, reliable and holding its value.
